Hollywood Extras is a collaboration between guitarist Cullen Gallagher (who also records as Modern Silent Cinema) and bassist/keyboardist Matt Barry (who also records as Phenakisto). The guitar and bass duo perform improvised experimental music inspired by silent movies. Instead of composing traditional scores, Hollywood Extras uses improvisation to engage with the movie, responding to the visuals as though they were a third member of the group. This musical project grew out of Barry and Gallagher's previous filmic endeavors, with Barry writing and directing movies and Gallagher scoring them. In Hollywood Extras, Barry and Gallagher saw an opportunity to combine their shared interests in early cinema and in the multimedia intersection of projection and live music performance. In addition to performing to classics of early cinema, Hollywood Extras also performs alongside their own silent film remixes, which use pre-existing works as foundations for their own visual experiments.
